Organization Backstory (Min. of 150+ Words): Bratva, n: A root word meaning brotherhood. To the Karpov Bratva, this term means everything.

Starting out in the early 1920s, they soon realized that their homeland had no relevant business opportunities, and decided to move to Russia, with the aim to expand their bratva. In 1940, the Karpov Bratva and the Docheski Bratva united in the name of the “Council of Thieves” to fight in the grueling Chechen war, invading deep into their nation, losing dozens of men in the process. Less than a year later, in 1941, the Germans finally invaded Russia, and the two nations were forced into an uneasy peace.

One of the rules in the life of these was to never make any contact with the government or what they stand for. However, many men were left destitute and abandoned in Russian prisons. When the Soviets began the formation of their penal battalions, under which they extended the offer for men to commute their prison sentences to service in the army, many men took them up on it. Of those men, a great deal were members of the Karpov Bratva. When the leader of the Karpov Bratva saw this, he knew that his options were few and their consequences were dire. He was faced with a choice: relocate again, forfeiting all of their assets in Russia, or completely abandoning the Bratva’s principles in favor of money and power.

With few places to turn, the Karpov Bratva decided that the time had once again come to move on to greener pastures. Upon landing on American shores, the Karpov’s had a great deal of trouble getting off their feet. Living in a city in the clutches of the Italian mob, it was, naturally, difficult to even lay the groundwork to rebuild.

Thus, they were forced to return to their roots, doing primarily street-level crime. Though they had the notion that they were still worth far more than simple muggers and lowlifes, it was impossible to tell them apart at a glance.
With their ill-gotten gains from months of work, they finally acquired their first expansion: a small bar on the outskirts of Brooklyn called “The Sparrow.” Though this was a small victory, it served as their first step in expanding their business. Still, they had a long way to go before they turned back into their once great selves that many knew and feared in Russia.
