Heroin Crisis in New York
January 4th, 1972
This past week has seen seven deaths in the neighborhoods of New York City, all attributed to a “bad batch of heroin,” according to James Whitehead, an officer in the Narcotics Division of the NYPD. “We haven’t found out exactly what’s causing the deaths, but each of the deceased had heroin in their systems,” said Whitehead. “It’s killing people.” So far, there has been one arrest in connection with the deaths. Police are urging people who have purchased heroin in the past week in New York City to hand it over at your local precinct, no questions asked.
Remains Found in Downtown New York
February 22nd, 1977
This morning, human remains were recovered from vegetation along a walkway in Downtown New York. According to the coroner’s report, the body was in the advanced stages of decomposition. The body was found by a park maintenance employee as he started his shift. “We usually trim the hedges once a week. The body wasn’t there last week.” Said Oscar Torres, the maintenance employee who came upon the remains. The victim has not yet been identified and police are currently investigating. Foul play is expected, and police are asking for any information that may help lead to how the remains ended up there.
Mob Killer Sentenced to Death
August 10th, 1979
Jeton Lokaj, the man found guilty of the murder of Mehmet Reufi, was sentenced to death by lethal injection at his hearing yesterday in the New York City Courthouse. He was found guilty for two counts of murder in the first degree, including last year’s murder of Mehmet Reufi whose remains were recovered in Downtown New York. “You are a killer. You killed these men for the belief that they had done wrong, and did so without payment. It is not my place to forgive you for your crimes, so I will leave that to God.” Stated Judge Kirk Patton before he sentenced Lokaj to death.
Lokaj immigrated to the United States in 1969 from Albania. He apparently could not find any work other than with an Albanian gang in New York City, with whom he sold drugs. When the gang broke apart, Lokaj allegedly found work with a secretive “Albanian mafia” operating in the city. He gained a ruthless reputation and became well known to local law enforcement when he allegedly beat a man to death in an alleyway behind a cafe following a disagreement inside. Lokaj has not yet been assigned an execution date. The Rudaj Organization is an international Albanian criminal organization with active members throughout the Balkans and in the United States. Its genesis can be traced back to the early 1970’s when Fatmir Rexhepi, a ranking member of the Rudaj Organization, immigrated to the United States. The masses that left Albania starting in the 70’s to the present day would include a number of criminals and gangsters who would work to establish Albanian criminal organizations, most notably in New York and New Jersey where they would work alongside their Italian counterparts.
