The origins of the original founders of the Morello Crime Family come from at the time the barren and underdeveloped island of Sicily. They were founded as a group of men who were a part of the Morello Clan and were prominent figures in the agricultural community. For centuries to come Sicily would grow and be occupied and held by various foreign nations, however, during this time, Sicily began to see its first signs of modern development. Many coastal towns and villages became trading hubs for merchants navigating the Mediterranean, and lemons became Sicily's primary export and cash crop. For the next hundred years, Sicily would undergo many changes in leadership and would be conquered by many different foreign invaders; the Morello Clan, however, stood the test of time and by now were a fairly wealthy trading clan that held a vast stake in the lemon industry. While on the surface, it would seem that the Morello Clan was a legit trading tycoon, in reality, they had made their vast fortune by selling weapons to Italian Rebels and by protecting other merchant clans from invading pirates. Throughout the 1800s Sicily was annexed into the unified kingdom of Italy; however, Sicily did not receive the aid and attention from the new government that the rest of the Italian Mainland did. The lack of government oversight led to bandits and thugs roaming the countryside, stealing and harassing business owners. Without any official law enforcement and the distrust of any formal government, the local farmers turned to their own sophisticated criminals to help protect their businesses. The Morello's were no exception to this new criminal industry, having countless farms under their protection. Throughout the 1800s these new organized crime groups began to create many of their traditions that we see "La Cosa Nostra" and many of the crime families have today.
In the 1920s Marco Morello, the leader of the clan at the time, decided to leave his home along with his close relatives, sons, and a few local enforcers and embarked on a 5-week voyage to the United States for a better life and the American dream; they would arrive at Ellis Island on September 28th, 1929. The family would settle at Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. They would live among a fairly sized and thriving Italian American population. It didn't take long before the Morello's would return to business and indulge in their criminal lifestyle; however, now they had the large playground of New York City at their disposal. During this time the Morello's fought for control against the various American gangs at the time and various ups and downs at his endeavors. Around 1951 Marco Morello would grow ill leaving the family in the hands of his sons Manfredi Morello and Gianni Morello who sought to expand the organization to unheard-of heights and expand into the other boroughs of New York. Their seats of power would soon transition to Brooklyn where they would find the most success but the most trouble.
While in the southside of Brooklyn, the brothers began to look for control of the vast amounts of people and businesses available at their disposal. Southside's crime rates were growing higher than ever before, and the two Morello brothers would have no issue paying off cops and corrupt politicians to turn a blind eye or two to certain crimes taking place around the city while also maintaining in the shadows and staying out of the spotlight while they continued to grow their wealth. Manfredi Morello would invest and purchase properties to launder money while Gianni Morello would begin to organize and establish their organization on the streets of southside, gaining territory and keeping other gangs in their place and under their boot at all times. The two brothers were becoming a force to be reckoned with just a matter of time until someone would poke the bear.
As the Morello brothers, Manfredi and Gianni, consolidated their power in the gritty streets of Southside Brooklyn, their criminal empire thrived. They operated in the shadows, manipulating the chessboard of organized crime, ensuring their grip tightened on the borough's businesses and illicit activities. The 1970s marked an era of expansion for the Morello Crime Family. The brothers' clandestine operations attracted the attention of law enforcement, but the Morello's were adept at greasing the wheels of corruption. Crooked cops and politicians turned a blind eye to their activities, allowing the family to flourish. Manfredi was the strategist, investing in legitimate businesses to launder money seamlessly. Gianni, on the other hand, was the enforcer, carving out territories for the Morello family on the mean streets of Southside. The Southside crime rates soared under the Morello's' rule, and their rivals found themselves either subdued or absorbed into the growing empire. The brothers' connections in the criminal underworld expanded, and their influence reached into every corner of New York City. Amidst this ascent to power, a new generation was coming of age within the Morello family. Carmine Di Morello, the spoiled and ambitious nephew of Manfredi and Gianni, had grown up in the shadow of his uncles' criminal enterprise. Fascinated by the allure of the family business, Carmine yearned to prove himself. The 1980s brought both prosperity and peril for the Morello Crime Family. Manfredi, now an elderly but shrewd don, continued to guide the family from behind the scenes. However, the growing influence of the Morello's attracted unwanted attention. Rival families, sensing a threat, began encroaching on Morello turf. In a clandestine meeting with a rival family, tensions escalated, and old alliances crumbled. The delicate balance of power shattered one fateful night when Don Manfredi Morello was ambushed. A gunshot echoed through the darkened streets, and the aging patriarch was struck in the head, leaving him clinging to life. The news of the attempt on Manfredi's life sent shockwaves through the Morello family. Gianni, fueled by both grief and fury, promised a slow death to the rival family responsible. Carmine Di Morello, seizing the opportunity to prove his worth, stepped up to the forefront. The young and ambitious nephew vowed to avenge his uncle and protect the family legacy, working closely with Gianni to navigate the treacherous waters of organized crime.
