Department of Planning - Construction Branch - Seansx - 03-26-2024 The upcoming map change is a huge step for the server that opens up a lot of new opportunity. One of these is what I call the Department of Construction / The Construction Branch of The DoP. For a bit of background the reason we have the upcoming map is because pendred figured out how to edit rp_southside which was formerly considered impossible. This means that at any time the map and properties on it can be changed on its new placeholder rp_southside_diverge. So why not take advantage of this extremely large opportunity to better rp, quality of life, and give people more say in the place they work out of. The idea is pretty simple, setup a department in the government which can take tickets from property holders ( anybody with the @landlord tag already pre-existing for the DoP ) and allow applications to be made for changes to properties they own. Just a few ideas that I've thought of include 1. Adding Basements or Upstairs to Properties - This one is pretty simple, expanding a building on the surface level isn't really possible as that would require shifting the entire map, but adding a secret hideout below a restaurant that serves as a meeting room, or a upstairs attic above a vacant store for a non licensed poker racket. 2. PERMA PROPS - This is a huge one, find a dupe that you love, and it can be set to be a permeant fixture on the map so your guys never have to worry about putting down a dupe. 3. Interactable Changes - Things such as radios you can hit e on that play music throughout the building, light switches, hidden doors, openable vaults, cabinets that can open and close. This one is honestly limitless and could bring about some very unique properties. 4. Exterior Changes - Minor things can be changed on the outside, some slight ideas are adding a fence around a property or a gate. 5. Minor Interior Changes - A great example of this would be changing a material on the inside of a building or removing map placed props such as a shelf, a table, etc. 6. Replacement Changes - A good example of this on the new map is the properties Red Devil and Golden Dragon, both of them have a lot of signs with those respective names, but if you wanted to keep the same business name you used in the past you can have the signs replaced with your business name. 7. Future Ideas - These are things that shouldn't be considered for some time but in the future you could things like. A building with no interior could be replaced by a building with an interior that your faction fully customizes. This would be very pricey. All of these give access to new roleplay opportunities, bring quality of life, and can be huge advantages to a faction if they go forward with it. For this reason, pricing for all of these would scale depending on the seriousness of the change. Small things could be 300k, some of these ideas could cost multi-millions. This would all have to be balanced with the current economy. Another large incentive to this is that an option to pay with irl cash for changes could be brought in, this would be yet another way to support the server and help it flourish. I plan to expand upon the post with actual government documents, more information on how this can be setup, and more ideas if it receives positive feedback so stay tuned. ( Also, this would be staff run similar to DoP. ) RE: Department of Planning - Construction Branch - anzati1 - 03-26-2024 permaprops laggy and bad, adding basements and whatnot isnt possible without the map, in which CODE would require lua teleporters for a spot outside of the map furthest i see this going is an rp thing for the DOP to recruit dupe builders to centralize them and have a good place to go to get a nice dupe built. also updating the map every week to change or edit properties is just a bad idea in general, leads the server open to a lot more problems including mismatching map versions, etc... But read below. Yes it would be better to directly edit a prop dupe build into the map. But read below. Now think about it, if theres 20 factions (I'm very out of touch on amount of factions) How many of those people change their dupes and how often? Weekly? Monthly? Too many map edits becomes an issue the SECOND someone messes up a single build, because then you need to recompile it and everyone on the server will have a map mismatch version, as nice custom models are, custom map edits should not be a thing for the amount of time and effort they take even with a lump sum of cash ingame or irl. A custom map edit of your property would be something permanant or not as easily changeable as you think, editing maps already is extremely tedious, on top of that, what happens if your property gets seized by DOP, now you have a building full of Jap Flags for an American faction... Makes no sense to me even if we had someone doing map edits 24/7. Also more about maps vs models, maps are NO WHERE near as forgiving than models, you mess up a model? You can still run the game, you mess up a map? NO ONE can play the server until its fixed. Ontop of that, yes editing southside is a BIG leap, but it still has gmod/source limits. Making every building into an enterable room opens up for more lag and limits being hit. We need less properties for more dense populations, with a very limit 128 player cap, you need to make the server feel actually alive and not just "oh, its at 128 but theres no people in any public areas to rp with" also i forgot to add, diverge has about 3 modelers semi-4 modelers, they're already constantly working on something for someone, map edits could take weeks/months WITHOUT disturbing the grand demand for custom clothing commissions. |
