The founder and Godfather, Hakaragua Sumiyoshi was diagnosed with cancer in the late 70’s after a long and successful reign. Due to his cancer, Hakaragua fled back to Japan as he was wanted in the United States to enjoy his last days in his homeland with his daughter and brother. With the absence of their Godfather, Hakaragua's first born son and heir to the Yakuza, Yamada Sumiyoshi took his father’s place and continued the Sumiyoshi-Kai Yakuza. Yamada over time increased the power and influence of his men, as he grew his Yakuza all over New York City and in other places of the country. Yamada involved his men with narcotics and introduced street racing to New York City, growing a name for himself in the criminal underworld. As his criminal empire grew, so did Yamada in age. Yamada grew his relations and made his brother underboss, as he watched his empire grow in size and power. Yamada then continued to make legal businesses and fronts, and put restaurants all over the country. His honorable method of business was the street racing racket he started and introduced into New York, shortly as he became the Godfather of the Sumiyoshi-Kai Yakuza.
