Organization Backstory:
Ellis Island, January 21st, 1902. Scott Murphy, a young Irish immigrant, arrived at the human-flood that was Ellis Island in the early 20th century. Many early Irish immigrants were of sturdy, Scotch-Irish blood. Pushed out of Ireland by religious conflicts, lack of political representation, and dire economic conditions. These immigrants, including the Murphy family, were pulled to America by the promise of land ownership and greater religious freedom. However, they were soon to find out this wasn't the case. After weeks of being held in horrid conditions at the Island, the Murphy family were dropped into the now infamous, Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan. The family struggled to make money, with the father, William Murphy, often resorting to petty crime in order to make ends meet. After the death of Scott's mother in 1910, Scott's father became an avid alcoholic. Scott, who was now 15 years of age, starting hustling himself in order to keep him and his father afloat. Scott soon fell into the readily available rackets in Hell's Kitchen, becoming an experienced pick-pocket and armed robber. Around this time Scott began to develop a crew of other Irish youths who were driven by the same dire circumstances that brought Scott to this position. Scott however differed from other street gangs at the time, as he aimed for a more respectable, organized approach to business. By 1916, Scott's crew soon became one of the largest in his area, frequently partaking in armed robbery, extortion, gambling, and murder. Due to Scott's brazen attempts at gaining power over his area, he frequently engaged in beefs with other street gangs, often winning these wars easily. But Scott still saw room for improvement. Now seeing Hell's Kitchen as a pathetic territory ran by common thugs, Scott made the decision to move his operation to Brooklyn, which was predominantly ran by the new Italian Families. Scott admired the Italian Organizations, viewing them as respectable businessmen, rather than low-level crooks. Him and his father soon settled into a two-bedroom flat in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. It didn't take long for Scott to mark his territory in the Borough, setting up multiple gambling dens and shaking down local businesses. The Italian Families, still viewing them as thugs, disregarding Scott's crew. Scott's Organization, which had been un-named until now, soon became known as the Bay Ridge Micks. Scott embraced his appointed name, and soon the whole crew began claiming the name. After his father's death in 1927, Scott began expanding his empire. Now becoming the second biggest importer of Opium, right behind the Chinese Triads. The Italian Families recognized BRM as a legitimate threat around now, with higher-ups deliberating gaining relations with the crew. But those hopes would be squashed when two low-ranking BRM members un-knowingly murdered an Italian captain due to disputes over an unpaid debt. The Italian Families took this as a gesture of war. On November 5th, 1931, while having a drink at an Irish owned pub, Scott was shot dead by two Italian gunmen. Scott's guards were both too drunk to defend their boss, and the assassins got away. This would spark a bloody war between the Bay Ridge Micks and multiple Italian run crews in Brooklyn. Houses were bombed, businesses were torched, and people were murdered, greatly impacting both sides. After months of carnage, the Italian crews proposed a truce to the BRM, as they realized this conflict was only hurting business. Having like minds, the BRM agreed and the chaos ceased. The hierarchy of the BRM was re-instated, as they respected and honored the original values and ranking structure of the Organization. The BRM and the Italian Families would go on to co-exist in Brooklyn, running their own respective rackets, and attempting to keep the beefs to a minimum. The crew prospered in the 1940s-50s, quickly gaining numbers and influence in local Police Departments and Government Positions. The Bay Ridge Micks would go on to be a driving power in the story of Organized Crime in America.
