Beyond what was said above and with no real insight into the situation, at the end of the day realistically it doesn’t matter if they told you that you could leave or not. Hell, it wouldn’t have mattered if they gave you a million dollars as severance and sent you on your way with a kiss to your forehead. The bottom line of organized crime is there is no out once you’re in. The longer you stay in the more of a liability you become if you were to ever decide to leave. Moreover, at least in Italian organized crime, your killer wasn’t some arch nemesis you could expect and prepare for… it was your best friends, people you knew for years or even since birth. You think someone close to you given that order would just come out and tell you “hey, I got asked to kill you for trying to leave this thing of ours, so may the best man win!”
