While the NYPD had begun to purchase cars with more round bodies for their precincts in the late 80's, the "blocky car" aesthetic wasn't phased out by the NYPD until the 90's, and even then they hadn't removed them from service until the late 90's. The Dodge Monaco would have only been replaced by cars like the Chevy Caprice (1989-1990 models), Dodge Diplomat (1987 model), Plymouth Gran Fury 1987 model), and the god-awful Chevrolet Citation.
