Organization Backstory (Min. of 250+ Words & any images):
In the 1950s multiple Italian-American gangs were based around South Brooklyn, New York. The gangs eventually united together under the name of the “South Brooklyn Boys”. At the beginning, the SBB consisted of several smaller neighborhood “greaser gangs” that were located in the multiple sections of Brooklyn. Greaser gangs were a subculture of young people that wanted to be more rebellious. These are all of the gangs that made up the original South Brooklyn Boys:
The South Brooklyn Devils
The Garfield Boys
The South Brooklyn Angels
The South Brooklyn Diablos
The Wanderers
The Degraw St. Boys
The Sackett St. Boys
The Butler Gents
The Gowanus Boys
The Kane St. Midgets
The Savages
The Testors
The Senators
The Little Gents
The Young Savages.
The label South Brooklyn Boys represented the loose connection between all of the neighborhood gangs.
During their operation, these gangs often had constant disputes and fought with each other. The main organization, referred to as "South Brooklyn" by most, was located around the Red Hook Projects, which back in the 1950s was predominantly Italian.
The highly reputed Lucchese mobster Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso was a famous member of the early South Brooklyn Boys. The gang has been loosely associated with and has worked for the Italian-American Mafia throughout its history to the present, but it is not an official Mafia crew.
During the 1970s, the South Brooklyn Boys represented not only the original 1950s gangs, but many new generations of children growing up in the South Brooklyn area. The term has not only been used as a gang association, but also as a loose connection for local kids to grow and make bonds together. During the 1980s to the present, a new generation of the South Brooklyn Boys has become active along with a newly opened pizza joint called the “South Brooklyn Boy’s Slice Shop”.
