"So I'm sitting at home, and the stew is cooking. I look out of the window and I smile, seeing them roll up in Abraham's Mercedes," Aunt Ofra says, her face clouded by smoke from her cigarette. "I remember it like it was yesterday..." Her harsh, croaky voice began to tell the story of the Goldbergs.
It all started in New York City, where the Goldbergs moved to in the fifties. After escaping the persecution of Jews in Europe during the 40s, the Goldbergs spent some time in the United Kingdom, but found that the socio-economic climate in that country was neither welcoming, nor easy to rebuild oneself in. Thus, the Goldbergs moved out to the USA, starting off in NYC for the time being. Abraham Goldberg, the elder of the surviving family, started by opening up a laundry in Borough Park, Brooklyn, amongst a growing Jewish neighbourhood that came about as a result of mass immigration after WW2. Slowly, the area began to shape into a community safe for Jews, but New York also proved itself to be a dangerous city for anyone in the 70s and 80s.
On March 10th, 1977 Abraham Goldberg was shot in New York City as a result of a move made by the Von Aachen Family, leaving Aunt Ofra in charge of the family. Fuelled by a hatred for Germans, Aunt Ofra Goldberg, now known as The Widow, decided to turn things around for the family, turning it into a criminal organisation that focuses on the survival, and enrichment, of the Goldbergs.
